IRS Warns Crypto Holders About Counterfeit Tax Letter Scam

Share

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning to cryptocurrency holders about a new scam involving counterfeit tax letters.

The scam, which brings crypto phishing into physical mailboxes, aims to steal digital assets or sensitive personal information from recipients who are instructed to register through a supposed 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal.'

The IRS emphasized that no such portal exists and urged taxpayers not to scan QR codes, click related links, or respond to calls requesting payments or personal information.

Fraudsters are exploiting public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence, according to IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Chief Jarod Koopman.
