IRS Warns Crypto Holders About Fake Compliance Letters

Share

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning about scammers sending counterfeit letters to cryptocurrency holders, directing them to a fake 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal'.

The agency's Criminal Investigation unit stated that the fake notices claim recipients must enroll in the portal before a deadline, but the IRS stressed it does not operate any such portal and is not sending the letters.

Once victims scan the QR code provided by the counterfeit notice, they are taken to a spoofed website where they are asked to enter personal information. The agency advised taxpayers not to scan QR codes from unsolicited letters, emails, or texts.

A recent investigation found that these counterfeit notices reference tax years 2017 through 2026 and were registered through a Hong Kong registrar and hosted in Romania.
