IRS Warns of Counterfeit Letters Targeting Crypto Holders with Fake Compliance Portal

Share

The IRS has issued a public warning about a scam targeting crypto holders, sending counterfeit letters designed to look like official correspondence from the agency.

The letters reference tax years spanning 2017 through 2026 and include a QR code that directs recipients to a phishing site masquerading as an official IRS enrollment page.

Coinbase flagged the threat two days before the IRS announcement, publishing a consumer alert in collaboration with security firm DarkTower detailing how the letters use realistic formatting to bypass skepticism.

The agency has clarified that it does not operate any Digital Asset Compliance Portal and urged taxpayers to verify communications through official channels.
