IRS Warns of Crypto Scam Using Counterfeit Letters
A new crypto scam is making the rounds, targeting digital asset holders and attempting to steal their assets and personal data. According to a warning from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), scammers are sending counterfeit letters that mimic official IRS correspondence.
The fake letters instruct recipients to register for the 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal,' a program that the agency says does not exist. The IRS confirmed that it does not use QR codes in its genuine notices and advised recipients to hang up immediately if a caller demands payment tied to one of the letters.
Borrowing from legitimate digital asset compliance letters, the scheme adds to a broader run of crypto scam warnings. The IRS's core advice is direct: never scan a QR code from an unsolicited letter, and never hand over payment information to a caller claiming to represent the agency.
