IRS Warns of Cryptocurrency Scam Targeting Holders with Fake Compliance Letters

Share

The IRS has issued a warning about a scam targeting cryptocurrency holders. The scammers are sending letters that appear to be from the IRS, claiming that recipients must enroll in a 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal' by a certain deadline.

The letters include a QR code that directs victims to a fraudulent website designed to look like IRS.gov. This site may request sensitive information such as personal details, cryptocurrency wallet information, and exchange account credentials.

The IRS emphasizes that it does not operate a Digital Asset Compliance Portal and urges taxpayers to verify the source of any unexpected requests for personal information before responding. Taxpayers are also advised to change their passwords for affected financial accounts and report any suspicious activity to the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI).
