Crypto scammers have found another way to exploit the market's uncertainty by using trending narratives in their malicious schemes.

The latest example is a phishing tactic employing fake tax agency letters from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The IRS warned the crypto community on July 30 that scammers are mailing counterfeit 'Digital Asset Compliance' letters to crypto users, requesting them to register on a lookalike IRS domain by scanning a QR code.

This is an attempt to mine personal information from unsuspecting users, including identification info, cryptocurrency wallet or exchange account details, and other sensitive data.

The scammers threaten penalties if the deadline is not met, creating a sense of urgency that convinces victims to hand over their information.

IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman commented on the matter, saying: 'Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.'

In another incident, Senator Cynthia Lummis' X account was compromised, promoting a newly created Solana meme coin 'USA'.

The post was promptly taken down after being flagged as suspicious, but not before it caused some awkwardness given the senator's push for the CLARITY Act.
