IRS Warns of Scam Targeting Cryptocurrency Holders with Fake Letters
A new scam targeting cryptocurrency holders has been identified by the IRS's Criminal Investigation division. The scammers send fake letters that look like they're coming from the federal agency, urging recipients to create an account on a 'Digital Asset Compliance Portal.' However, there is no such thing as this portal, and if victims submit their sensitive information, it goes straight to the scammers.
The IRS warns that fraudsters are increasingly using convincing websites, official-looking letters, and urgent deadlines to trick victims. In this scam, the fake website asks users for personal and financial information, including details about cryptocurrency exchange accounts and wallets.
After submitting their info, victims receive a phone call where scammers pose as representatives and ask for passwords, 2FA codes, or private keys to access their crypto accounts. The IRS emphasizes that there is no legitimate reason for companies or representatives to request these sensitive details.
The IRS's Criminal Investigation Chief, Jarod Koopman, stated, 'Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.'
