IRS Warns US Crypto Users of Phishing Scam via Physical Mail

Share

Crypto users in the US are being targeted by hackers using physical mail to scam them out of their wallet credentials and private keys. The IRS has issued a warning about the phishing campaign, which involves fake letters claiming that recipients must register their crypto holdings before an urgent deadline.

The letters contain QR codes that direct victims to a spoofed website mimicking the official IRS platform. On this site, users are instructed to connect their crypto wallets or input sensitive data such as personal identity information, exchange login credentials, seed phrases, and private keys.

The IRS has emphasized that it will never include QR codes in unsolicited letters or ask users to scan and access an online portal. Crypto holders are advised to be cautious and handle their wallet details carefully, and anyone who may have fallen victim is advised to freeze their accounts, change their exchange passwords, and contact the crypto exchange.
