Israel Escalates Gaza Strikes Amid Deadlocked Disarmament Talks

Israeli forces have escalated strikes in Gaza, killing at least 17 people including children in early August. This escalation comes after President Donald Trump's announcement of a phased disarmament framework on July 30-31, 2026.

Hamas agreed to consider laying down its weapons under the deal, but Israel has made it clear that they will not pull back until Hamas verifiably disarms. The framework proposes gradually stripping Hamas of its military capabilities in exchange for an end to Israeli operations and a withdrawal of forces from Gaza.

Israeli officials have communicated 'serious security concerns' to the White House, suggesting that Hamas may be using the disarmament framework as a chance to rebuild their military infrastructure rather than genuinely surrendering it. A ceasefire agreement signed in October 2025 has also been marked by a pattern of false starts, with both sides unable to agree on whether Hamas should disarm before Israel withdraws or vice versa.
