Israel has launched Project Nexus, a government-led initiative to build a sovereign quantum computer on Israeli soil. The project is part of the country's national AI strategy, which aims to achieve 'technological sovereignty' in AI and quantum technologies. The initiative has significant implications for crypto security, as most blockchain networks rely on cryptographic algorithms that quantum computers could theoretically crack. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could derive private keys from public keys, posing a risk to funds stored in dormant wallets.
Several blockchain projects are already working on post-quantum cryptography, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who has discussed quantum resistance as a long-term priority. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been standardizing post-quantum cryptographic algorithms.
