Itaú Pushes Tokenized Bonds in Regulatory Sandbox
Brazil's largest lender, Itaú Unibanco, is pushing forward with tokenized finance despite regulatory uncertainty elsewhere. The bank has partnered with OpenAssets to test tokenized bonds and funds in a pilot program overseen by ANBIMA, the Brazilian securities industry watchdog.
The sandbox program allows regulated entities to experiment with tokenized fixed-income instruments in a controlled environment. For Itaú, this is an extension of earlier explorations into blockchain for settlement and asset registration.
The bank's pilot aims to address practical questions such as how to ensure ownership rights are properly recorded and how to handle corporate actions on-chain.
This effort comes amid a broader push by Brazilian regulators to modernize capital markets. ANBIMA's pilot is part of a regulatory framework that makes Brazil an attractive testing ground for banks looking to move beyond proofs-of-concept.
