Itaú Unibanco Joins OpenAssets in Blockchain Asset Testing Pilot
Itaú Unibanco, Brazil's largest private bank, has partnered with OpenAssets to explore tokenized fixed-income products and investment funds on a blockchain-based distributed ledger system. The collaboration is part of an ANBIMA-supervised pilot program, which aims to test the issuance, trading, and settlement of these digital assets.
The initiative follows the approval of 20 use cases by ANBIMA in April, selected from 39 proposals submitted by over 50 financial organizations. Itaú Unibanco will leverage its expertise in capital markets, while OpenAssets will supply the underlying tokenization technology platform for the experimental phase.
This partnership is significant not only because of Itaú's market position but also due to Brazil's emerging status as a hub for digital asset tokenization. The country has seen several major initiatives, including VERT Capital's plan to tokenize $1 billion worth of debt instruments and Mercado Bitcoin's intention to tokenize $200 million in assets on the XRP Ledger.
