Jackson Hole Goes Crypto: Central Bankers Confront Digital Assets

Share

The annual Jackson Hole central bank retreat is taking on a new twist, as it overlaps significantly with the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium held earlier this month. The symposium, which gathered about 500 guests at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole between Aug. 17 and Aug. 20, focused on digital assets and was attended by executives, investors, and lawmakers.

The Kansas City Fed's annual economic symposium, taking place from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29, will have a major focus on financial innovation, including stablecoins, tokenized securities, and artificial intelligence in finance. The speaker list is under wraps, but it has been confirmed that Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will deliver the keynote address on Friday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Stablecoins are a key area of interest for central bankers, as they can be used as private monetary instruments and have a significant impact on government debt, bank deposits, and payment access. The Federal Reserve has already referenced the connection between stablecoins and central banking in its June conference on the international role of the dollar.

The overlap between crypto and traditional finance is becoming increasingly clear, with about 99.4% of fiat-backed stablecoins pegged to the US currency. This raises questions about dollar dominance and the potential for faster digital dollarization in other countries.
