Japan and US Coordinate Yen Stabilization Measures Amid Weak Currency
Tokyo and Washington are working together to stabilize the yen, which has been trading at an all-time low against the US dollar. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has warned of 'decisive action' if the currency continues to weaken past a certain level.
Katayama met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in May 2026 to discuss currency coordination, and officials maintain constant contact on currency matters. Japan has spent around $63.5 billion on past yen interventions, showing its commitment to maintaining stability.
In response to the weak yen, Japanese corporations are turning to Bitcoin and XRP as a hedge against their treasury holdings. Over 2 million business accounts have been registered with SBI VC Trade, one of Japan's major crypto exchanges, seeking alternatives to traditional assets.
