Japan Banks Unite to Launch Yen Stablecoin Challenge
The global stablecoin market has exceeded $300 billion, according to data cited by the European Central Bank. However, nearly 90% of that market was controlled by Tether and Circle, the issuers of the dollar-denominated USDT and USDC tokens.
Japan's yen stablecoin plans are a significant development in the space, reflecting a broader competition between major economies over digital payments, cross-border settlement, trade finance, and monetary influence. The country's three largest banking groups, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, and Mizuho Financial Group, have announced plans to work toward jointly issuing yen-backed stablecoins by the end of the financial year ending in March 2027.
The project is supported by Japan's Financial Services Agency and is expected to include live commercial transactions. The involvement of these established financial institutions could make yen stablecoins more credible to businesses that remain cautious about crypto-native issuers.
