Japan FSA Upgrades Crypto Regulatory Framework with New Division
The Financial Services Agency (FSA) in Japan has reorganized its regulatory framework to better supervise cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. The agency is upgrading the Cryptocurrency, Blockchain and Innovation Counsellor's Office to a division-level unit, dubbed the 'Cryptocurrency and Stablecoin Division'. This change reflects the growing importance of digital assets in Japan's financial sector.
The new division will be placed under the Asset Management and Insurance Bureau, allowing it to carry out regulatory planning and supervision more systematically. The existing crypto monitoring office will remain under the new division, while the innovation promotion office will be split into an 'Innovation Promotion Office' and a 'Digital Payments Planning Office'.
The addition of 'stablecoin' to the unit's name is significant, as it indicates that the agency sees stablecoin issuance and distribution as more important than blockchain technology itself. This shift in focus reflects the expanding use of stablecoins in Japan for payments and financial services.
