Japan Opens Door to Crypto ETFs with Major Regulatory Shift
The Japanese government has reclassified cryptocurrencies as financial instruments, paving the way for the creation of crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the country. This structural shift establishes a legal framework for separate taxation of crypto assets and paves the way for future ETF listings on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Mazrael, a longtime Shiba Inu community member, notes that this reclassification is the key hurdle an ETF needs to clear. While FSA rulemaking still has to happen, first listings are likely to occur in 2027 at the earliest, with Bitcoin possibly going first.
Shiba Inu (SHIB) stands a good chance of being included in Japan's ETF market due to its inclusion on the Green List by the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA). This list also includes BTC and ETH. Mercari, Japan's largest marketplace with 23 million users, has also listed SHIB.
