Japan Paves Way for Crypto ETFs with FIEA Reclassification
Japan has taken a significant step towards allowing cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in its market. On July 15, 2026, the National Diet reclassified cryptocurrencies as financial instruments under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (FIEA), bringing them into line with traditional financial markets.
This move is crucial for establishing a legal framework for the taxation of crypto assets and paving the way for future crypto ETFs. According to Mazrael, a longtime Shiba Inu community member, this reclassification is what an ETF needs to be listed on exchanges like the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which could happen as early as 2027.
Shiba Inu ($SHIB) is well-positioned for this potential development, having been included on Japan's Green List in November 2025. This list includes Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and other approved cryptocurrencies that meet specific requirements.
Mercari, Japan's largest marketplace with 23 million users, also listed Shiba Inu in June 2026. Mazrael notes that eligibility is the hard part for most crypto assets, but having a spot on the Green List gives $SHIB a head start in Japan's ETF race.
