Japan Sets Sights on Blockchain for $7 Trillion Bond Market
Japan's financial regulators have announced plans to move the country's $7 trillion bond market to blockchain technology. The Financial Services Agency (FSA), Ministry of Finance, and Bank of Japan will lead a study group that aims to develop a new system for instant settlement of stock trades and Japanese government bonds (JGBs).
The current system takes two days to settle stocks and one day to settle JGBs, but the new blockchain-based system would reduce this time to near zero. This could have significant benefits for investors, who would be able to reinvest their cash almost instantly.
Japan has been testing blockchain technology in its financial sector for several years, with four major lenders already running a trial of tokenized JGB collateral transfers using the Canton Network. The plan is to put dates on a national rollout by early 2027, with the system potentially going live in the early 2030s.
The timing of this move is interesting, as Japan's bond market is currently under stress due to high yields and inflation concerns. Markets are predicting an 80% chance of a Bank of Japan rate hike next month, which could further impact the bond market.
