Japan Targets 2028 for First Spot Bitcoin ETF Launch
Japan is poised to launch its first spot Bitcoin ETF by 2028, following the approval of new legislation that recognizes cryptocurrencies as financial assets. The country's Financial Services Agency (FSA) is updating investment fund rules in response.
The law change gives Bitcoin and other digital assets a clearer legal status, which could attract more investors to the market. Regulators aim to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2027 or 2028.
Japan's ETF market is expected to become one of Asia's largest once the rules are finalized. Estimated crypto investment trusts, including Bitcoin ETFs, could attract up to JPY 3 trillion (around $19.5 billion) by the end of fiscal 2028.
