Japan Tightens Crypto Exchange Withdrawal Rules to Combat Scams
The Financial Services Agency (FSA) and National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan have requested stricter measures to combat cryptocurrency-related scams. The two agencies presented an 11-point response plan to the Japan Virtual and Crypto assets Exchange Association (JVCEA), which includes introducing a system for pre-registering withdrawal addresses and enhanced transaction monitoring protocols.
The proposed measures aim to reduce the risk of unauthorized transfers and make it harder for scammers to quickly move stolen assets. The FSA is focused on ensuring that exchanges comply with robust anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) standards, while the NPA is directly witnessing the impact on victims.
The request follows a significant uptick in financial losses attributed to investment scams and romance scams, many of which originate on social media platforms. Japanese authorities have been increasingly concerned about the role of cryptocurrency in facilitating these fraudulent schemes, as the pseudonymous nature of digital assets makes tracing funds difficult.
