Japanese Yen Rockets Higher on Intervention Speculation
The Japanese Yen has surged to its highest level in a week against the US Dollar on Wednesday, fueled by speculation of central bank intervention.
The USD/JPY exchange rate dropped nearly 0.90% as hawkish Bank of Japan (BoJ) expectations bolstered the Japanese currency, according to FXStreet.
A BoJ board member's comments on a more 'nimble approach with rate hikes' and a 'different response from the conventional semiannual rate-hike pace' added to the speculation of interest rate increases, which has been on the radar for policymakers since Governor Kazuo Ueda mentioned the possibility of raising rates at the September 17-18 meeting.
The BoJ's intentions to keep raising rates if economic and price developments align with its projections also contributed to the currency's strength, but some experts warn that the Japanese Yen's upside may be limited by persistent macroeconomic headwinds, including Japan's expansionary fiscal policy and heavy debt burden.
