Japan's Fentanyl Smuggling Hub Exposed Through Crypto Trail

Share

A recent blockchain analysis has exposed a network of cryptocurrency accounts linked to a Japanese-based fentanyl operation, which appears to have used digital assets to move funds internationally. Investigators found connections between the network and sanctioned entities, as well as suspected scam activity.

The study identified four Tron wallets connected to Amarvel's cryptocurrency accounts, which were previously associated with a Chinese chemical manufacturer. The company, Hubei Amarvel Biotech, operated from Nagoya and received cryptocurrency payments from Mexican drug cartels and other customers buying fentanyl precursor chemicals.

The analysis also revealed links between the operation and a Japanese internet domain, online aliases, and businesses associated with China's Hebei province. Over 120 cryptocurrency interactions were identified with organisations sanctioned by US authorities, suggesting a larger criminal network was involved.
