Japan's Largest Utility Company Turns Loyalty Points into Onchain Payments on Polygon
Kansai Electric Power's loyalty points program, MOACT, has been integrated with Polygon to allow users to convert their NORM points into JPYC, a yen stablecoin. The feature, launched on July 30, enables users to swap their loyalty points for JPYC issued on Polygon, which can be used as an electronic payment instrument in Japan.
The integration is part of a larger trend of Japanese utility companies exploring the use of blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) technologies. Kansai Electric's subsidiary, MOACT, has partnered with HashPort to enable this feature, which allows users to redeem their loyalty points for JPYC instead of traditional gift certificates.
JPYC is a yen-pegged stablecoin issued by JPYC Inc., which was registered as Japan's first regulated stablecoin with the Financial Services Agency. Polygon Labs has highlighted the significance of this integration, stating that one of Japan's largest utility companies is now turning loyalty points into onchain payments on its network.
