Japan's Monetary Policy Crossroads Threatens Global Markets and Cryptocurrencies
Japan's decades-long monetary policy of keeping interest rates near zero has put the country at a critical crossroads, warns analyst EGRAG CRYPTO. This approach has led to Japan piling up one of the largest public debt loads among developed economies, with the Bank of Japan becoming the biggest single buyer of its own bonds.
Wage growth exceeding 5% for the first time since before Japan's deflationary period has weakened the case for near-zero rates. Raising them could lead to losses for banks and insurers holding low-yield bonds, as well as higher refinancing costs on Japan's own debt.
A rapid unwind of yen-funded trades could trigger forced selling across markets, including cryptocurrencies, EGRAG notes. He points out that a fast unwinding would force investors to sell assets they borrowed in Japan to repay yen loans, leading to a chain reaction that won't stay contained within Japan.
