Japan's XRP Hesitation Fades as Tokenization Takes Center Stage
Evernorth Chief Operating Officer Meg Nakamura believes that Japan's adoption of XRP is hindered by a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma. She spoke at WebX Asia 2026 in Tokyo, where she noted that institutions want proof of broader participation before investing in XRP. However, widespread adoption cannot occur until more players take the initial leap.
This self-reinforcing cycle is reflected in Japan's financial culture, which prioritizes regulatory compliance and long-term risk management over being a first mover. As a result, many firms are opting for pilot programs, strategic collaborations, and limited deployments to validate blockchain technology before expanding its use.
Nakamura thinks the industry's focus on tokenization is shifting attention away from digital payments. Tokenization enables real-world assets like government bonds, equities, and commodities to exist as digital assets on blockchain networks. This has potential to streamline settlement, reduce operational costs, unlock liquidity, and enable fractional ownership.
Nakamura believes regulatory clarity is becoming a catalyst for innovation, giving financial institutions the confidence to develop blockchain-based products while meeting compliance requirements. Japan's comprehensive digital asset regulatory environment makes it well-positioned to capitalize on this shift.
