Japan's Yen Rescue Threatens Carry Trades as Bitcoin Holds Firm
Japan's yen support measures are threatening global carry trades, which involve investors borrowing cheaply in yen and moving capital into higher-yielding assets, including technology stocks and cryptocurrencies.
The strengthening yen can reverse the economics of this strategy by increasing the amount investors need to repay. Government intervention or tighter Bank of Japan policy may force leveraged investors to close positions quickly, selling risk assets like Bitcoin and technology stocks in the process.
Bitcoin is currently holding near $65,000, but a rapid unwind of carry trades could still create volatility even if BTC holds its ground. AlphaPepe, a cryptocurrency project with four active products, is targeting the retail rotation that may follow after market uncertainty settles down.
