Jones Warns of Potential Government Seizure of Cryptocurrencies in Crisis
Controversial media figure Alex Jones has warned cryptocurrency holders that governments may seize digital assets in times of financial crisis. He referred to existing legal frameworks and discussions among authorities, claiming that they had explored ways to impact private financial assets during a major banking collapse.
Jones stated that 'We are going to start grabbing your cryptocurrencies. We're going to grab your bank accounts. We'll grab your house' if global economic pressures intensify further. He emphasized that his warning was not an attack on XRP or Bitcoin, but rather a cautionary message about government actions in times of crisis.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (BRRD) are two key frameworks Jones mentioned. The FDIC has authority to resolve failing banks, but crypto assets are not covered by federal deposit insurance. BRRD lays out procedures for restructuring banks in crisis situations, with certain customer deposits protected from 'bail-in' actions.
XRP community members questioned Jones's claims, with one prominent validator and ecosystem contributor, Vet, arguing that the FDIC has not declared any power to seize private cryptocurrencies or personal property. Vet noted that while uninsured deposits exceeding $250,000 can be at risk, digital assets stored in self-custody wallets are not considered bank deposits and would not become part of an FDIC receivership if a traditional bank fails.
