JPMorgan Treats Bitcoin as Balance-Sheet-Grade Collateral
JPMorgan Chase made a significant shift in its stance on cryptocurrencies by launching a program that allows institutional clients to pledge Bitcoin and Ethereum as collateral for U.S. dollar loans through its Kinexys digital assets platform.
The bank's move marks a reversal from its previous dismissal of crypto as 'speculative noise.' Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has been vocal about his skepticism towards Bitcoin in the past, calling it a 'hyped-up fraud' and a 'pet rock.'
However, behind closed doors, the bank's technology division had been quietly building infrastructure to support cryptocurrency trading. The Kinexys platform now processes over $5 billion in daily transaction volume and has handled over $3 trillion in cumulative settlements since its launch.
The program applies estimated haircuts of 30% to 50% on crypto collateral, which means a client pledging $100,000 in Bitcoin may receive only $50,000 to $70,000 in financing. Real-time price feeds from oracle providers continuously update the valuation of the pledged assets.
