JPMorgan Weighs Stablecoin Launch Amid Joint Venture with Major US Banks
JPMorgan has been exploring the possibility of launching its own stablecoin, according to The Wall Street Journal. This comes as no surprise given the bank's existing JPM Coin, a tokenized deposit, and its operation of its own blockchain.
However, when asked about the potential launch, a JPMorgan spokeswoman stated that there are currently no plans to issue a stablecoin, but the bank would evaluate its options based on customer demand and regulatory developments.
In contrast, a group of over a dozen financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Santander, has been working on a joint stablecoin venture. The proposed token would initially be backed by dollars and potentially expand to euros and other G7 currencies in the future.
The development follows previous reports from last May that major US banks were exploring a joint stablecoin initiative involving entities tied to JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and other lenders.
