JPY Range-Bound Ahead of BoJ Hike as Markets Price in Further Tightening
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has been experiencing a quiet period, extending its tight consolidation from last Thursday. According to Scotiabank strategists Shaun Osborne and Eric Theoret, this is due to limited fundamental releases and hawkish messaging from the Bank of Japan (BoJ). Markets are gradually pricing in a 25 bp BoJ hike for September 18, which could provide additional near-term support via spreads.
Osborne and Theoret emphasize that messaging will be key as market participants assess policymakers' tone and consider the prospect of further tightening later this year and into 2027. For USD/JPY, the chart shows a flat range between support at 158.00 and resistance in the mid/upper-159s.
The BoJ's hawkish stance is being reflected in spreads, providing some support for the JPY. However, the overall picture remains uncertain as market participants wait to see how policymakers will approach future tightening measures.
