Justice Department Cracks Down on Crypto-Funded Hamas Operations
The Justice Department has announced the seizure of over $560,000 in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas. The funds were seized as part of an operation aimed at disrupting financing for the militant group. In addition to the cryptocurrency, authorities took control of website domains and communication platforms used for fundraising and recruitment.
According to FBI affidavits, Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising in early 2019 through its Qassam Brigades, or military wing. The group solicited donations on its Telegram channel and offered instructions for making anonymous contributions. Officials bragged that the currency would be untraceable.
Brett Leatherman, an FBI assistant director, stated that the bureau will continue to use its authorities to intercept illicit funds and prevent terrorist organizations from exploiting digital networks. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, emphasized in a video statement that 'your networks are not secure, your crypto is vulnerable, and we will not stop until your ability to wage war is defeated.'
