Justice Department Cracks Down on Hamas Crypto Fundraising
The US Department of Justice has seized over $560,000 in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas. The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that it had disrupted financing for the militant group by seizing cryptocurrency meant to support its military wing.
In addition to the cryptocurrency seizure, the department took control of website domains and communication platforms used for fundraising and recruitment. It also obtained information about thousands of people who contacted Hamas with the goal of giving money to the group.
According to FBI affidavits filed in connection with the seizures, Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising in early 2019 through its Qassam Brigades, or military wing. The group solicited donations on its Telegram channel and used direct online fundraising, boasting that the cryptocurrency would be untraceable.
FBI Assistant Director Brett Leatherman stated that the bureau would continue to use its authorities to intercept illicit funds and prevent terrorist organizations from exploiting digital networks to finance their operations.
