Justin Sun Sounds Quantum Alarm for Bitcoin as TRON Targets Upgrade
Justin Sun, founder of TRON, issued a warning to Bitcoin about the threat of quantum computing at the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong on August 27. According to Sun, quantum risks are not limited to crypto and Bitcoin may need more time to organize a consensus on how to reduce the threat.
Sun stated that TRON plans to upgrade its blockchain to quantum-resistant security by the end of 2026, which is later than his original timetable in April. The upgrade will replace or expand TRON's current cryptographic signature scheme with post-quantum resistant digital signature schemes.
The main Bitcoin quantum computing risk involves elliptic-curve cryptography, and Sun emphasized that Bitcoin's decentralized nature may make cryptographic upgrades hard to implement in practice, requiring consensus among developers, node operators, miners, wallets, and other infrastructure.
