Kalshi Seeks Regulatory Approval for Stock Index Perpetual Futures
Kalshi, a platform known for its prediction markets, is seeking regulatory approval to launch perpetual futures tied to U.S. stock indexes. The company filed documents with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Aug. 18, requesting permission to offer these products to traders.
Perpetual futures have no expiration date, allowing traders to maintain positions indefinitely and betting on price movements without taking delivery of the underlying asset. Instead, funding fees keep the market price aligned with the underlying index.
Kalshi's proposed US500 perpetual futures would track the MerQube U.S. Large Cap Index, which measures the performance of 500 large-cap U.S. stocks. This marks Kalshi's continued expansion into the broader derivatives market, building on its recent approval for cryptocurrency-linked perpetual futures and filings to launch products tied to precious metals.
If approved, these products would give retail and institutional traders a new way to speculate on the direction of the U.S. stock market without buying shares directly. The CFTC's decision will be closely watched by the industry, as it could set a precedent for future product approvals.
