Kalshi's Crypto Perpetual Futures Market Hits Record $17.98 Million Open Interest
Kalshi's crypto perpetual futures market has reached a record-breaking $17.98 million in open interest, according to recent data. This milestone is significant as it indicates that traders are increasingly turning to Kalshi for regulated access to leveraged crypto price exposure.
The company became the first in U.S. history to offer CFTC-regulated perpetual futures on May 29, 2026. Perpetual futures allow traders to take directional positions on an asset's price without owning the underlying asset itself. This can be a more accessible and cost-effective option for traders looking to gain exposure to crypto markets.
Kalshi's contracts use leverage, which allows traders to control larger positions with less collateral. However, this also amplifies potential losses if market moves against the trader. To mitigate these risks, Kalshi uses a funding rate charged every eight hours to keep perpetual-futures prices aligned with the underlying spot market.
While the $17.98 million figure is impressive, it's worth noting that it still lags behind major crypto perpetual futures venues like Hyperliquid, which had $11.7 billion in daily open interest across 377 pairs as of June 3, 2026. Nonetheless, record activity suggests traders are starting to explore regulated alternatives to traditional spot markets.
