Kansai Electric Powers Up Polygon with Yen Stablecoin Partnership
Kansai Electric Power, Japan's largest utility company, has partnered with Polygon to turn its loyalty points into JPYC, the yen stablecoin. Users of MOACT, the rewards app run by Kansai Electric's subsidiary, can now swap their NORM points for JPYC on Polygon. This feature is live as of July 30 and allows users to convert their loyalty points into a regulated yen-pegged stablecoin that can be used across DeFi platforms.
The integration adds to the momentum of JPYC integrations funneling Japan's legacy loyalty-point economy onchain. HashPort, the wallet developer, notes that Polygon processes more JPYC volume than all other chains combined, with 84% of JPYC holders using their wallet. For Kansai Electric, this partnership offers a way to turn its loyalty points into a gateway product for onboarding utility customers into onchain payments.
Kansai Electric spun up MOACT as a standalone company on July 1, with Yohei Koyama as CEO. HashPort emphasized that the point conversion is structured so it doesn't fall under Japan's crypto exchange or electronic payment instrument trading licenses. This partnership highlights the growing trend of traditional companies embracing decentralized finance (DeFi) and stablecoins.
