Kaspa Activates Toccata Hard Fork, Adds Native Smart Contract Functionality
Kaspa's Toccata hard fork was activated on June 30, 2026, marking a significant upgrade to the network. The update added native Layer-1 covenants and zero-knowledge proof verification, moving Kaspa from a pure payment chain towards a programmable base layer.
The Toccata hard fork did not turn Kaspa into an Ethereum clone but instead built smart-contract-like functionality directly into Kaspa's existing UTXO model. This differentiates it from the virtual-machine approach used by Ethereum and Solana.
The upgrade built on Kaspa's earlier Crescendo hard fork, which increased block production from 1 block per second to 10 blocks per second in May 2025.
Key technical upgrades include native Layer-1 covenants, OpZkPrecompile for zero-knowledge proof verification, and a new transaction format with transaction introspection. Additionally, Kaspa's own token standard, KRC-20, is now built into the base layer rather than added through a wrapper.
Kaspa already had smart contracts through Kasplex, an Ethereum-compatible zkEVM rollup that reached mainnet in late August 2025. However, Toccata operates differently by putting covenant logic and ZK verification directly into Kaspa's Layer 1 using the UTXO model.
