Kaspa Sticks to Proof-of-Work Despite Industry Shift
Kaspa's proof-of-work approach is unique in the cryptocurrency space. Unlike other projects that have moved to proof-of-stake, Kaspa stays true to its roots with a consensus method that samples an honest majority of the network in real-time.
The project's founder, Yonatan Sompolinsky, argues that this is because proof-of-work atomically ties block production to voting rights, something proof-of-stake cannot do without separating these two steps. This allows Kaspa to confirm blocks roughly every 100 milliseconds, far faster than Bitcoin's one block per 10 minutes.
Kaspa's blockDAG structure, built on top of its proof-of-work base, is key to achieving this speed. The GHOSTDAG protocol orders multiple blocks into a single agreed-upon sequence, rather than discarding all but one as older proof-of-work chains do.
