Kazakhstan Dangles Tax Breaks to Lure Back Crypto Miners
Kazakhstan's government is trying to lure back its crypto mining industry with a new decree offering tax breaks and legal certainty. The country was once one of the world's largest cryptocurrency mining hubs, but miners left or went underground after their power usage strained the grid in 2021.
The government signed a decree providing private investors with a three-year tax break on personal income from digital asset transactions if they declare their holdings and move them onto regulated domestic platforms. The assets must not be connected to fraud, money laundering, or unlicensed crypto services.
This move is part of a global trend where countries are offering incentives and simplified legal frameworks to attract crypto owners back to their home countries. Experts say that the decree addresses the energy question that triggered Kazakhstan's earlier mining crisis by allowing associated gas from oil fields to be used for electricity generation in mining operations.
Binance Kazakhstan's General Manager Nurkhat Kushimov believes the tax incentive is key, saying it makes working in a licensed environment more attractive and fosters trust in the market. However, others are cautious about relying solely on tax breaks to draw users back to domestic platforms.
