Kazakhstan Shifts Focus on Quality Over Quantity in Cryptocurrency Mining
Kazakhstan is taking steps to develop its cryptocurrency mining industry by shifting focus from quantity to quality. In a recent government meeting, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov emphasized the need for a more efficient operating model that balances energy consumption with transparent taxation and integration into the global digital economy.
Bektenov noted that Kazakhstan has already established itself as a significant player in the global cryptocurrency mining market, ranking among the top 10 countries by its share of global Bitcoin mining by late 2025. However, he stressed that the priority should now be on developing a more sustainable and controlled industry.
The prime minister instructed relevant government agencies to develop additional measures for the industry's growth, including creating a fully-fledged digital mining ecosystem with an exchange, digital tools, tokenization, asset custody, and payment solutions. A mechanism for using gas- and coal-fired power generation to support mining centers is also being worked out.
