Kazakhstan Tightens Cryptocurrency Mining Rules, Requires Reserve Transfers
Kazakhstan's government has introduced new rules for cryptocurrency mining in the country. The regulations, which came into effect on July 28, 2026, require miners to meet strict conditions to obtain a strategic miner status.
The new framework allows companies to submit applications through the state 'E-Licensing' system or via an authorized body's office. To qualify, they must demonstrate compliance with infrastructure, energy, tax discipline, and technical readiness requirements.
Strategic miners must own an own data center with a capacity of at least 150 MW, connect to power grids from substations of 35 kV and above, use equipment with a hashrate of at least 150 TH/s per unit, have no tax debt or encumbrances on property, and sign contracts with internet providers.
Miners who meet these conditions will receive long-term electricity quotas at preferential rates for 10 years. However, they must also transfer part of their mined digital assets to the national crypto reserve each month.
