Kbank Leads South Korea's Blockchain-Powered Cross-Border Payments Push with Ripple
South Korea's banking sector is making progress towards blockchain-powered cross-border payments, with Ripple at its center. A recent claim on social media that Jeonbuk Bank (JB Bank) had deployed Ripple Payments to replace SWIFT was found to be unfounded. In reality, it's Kbank, South Korea's first internet-only bank, that has announced a partnership with Ripple to pilot blockchain-based remittances.
The partnership between Kbank and Ripple targets specific remittance corridors, including Korea-UAE and Korea-Thailand. Ripple Payments, the company's enterprise cross-border settlement product, promises instant transfers without pre-funding correspondent accounts, freeing up liquidity that would otherwise be tied up in traditional SWIFT transactions.
Ripple isn't the only player trying to modernize international transfers; SWIFT has been upgrading its infrastructure, and companies like Nium and Wise are also offering real-time payment rails. For Ripple, the Kbank pilot is a significant proof point in Asia, where the company has faced challenges in securing partnerships.
