Keel Decommissions Bitcoin Mining Sites, Focuses on AI Data Centers
Keel Infrastructure has decommissioned all four of its US Bitcoin mining sites as it pivots towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) data centers. The company, formerly known as Bitfarms, ceased operations at its Moses Lake facility in Washington on April 28, followed by the shutdowns of its Panther Creek, Scrubgrass, and Sharon sites in Pennsylvania on June 29.
The facilities are still generating revenue through electricity sales, but Keel is now focusing on developing new data centers. Three priority US projects offer a combined 478MW of gross capacity, with Moses Lake expected to become the first site to come online and generate revenue in 2027. Zoning has been approved, the former mining building demolished, and land development and environmental permits are still in progress.
Keel is also advancing plans for data centers in Sharon and Panther Creek, Pennsylvania, with zoning and conditional land development approval already secured. The company's CEO, Ben Gagnon, stated that all three priority sites were nearing full permitting, with multiple prospective tenants negotiating for capacity at each location.
