Kentucky Jury Duty Scam Demands Bitcoin Payment
A combined jury duty and cryptocurrency scam is targeting residents of Kentucky once again.
The scammers, pretending to be local or state law enforcement, claim that the victim has missed jury duty and must pay a fine in Bitcoin to resolve the situation. They instruct their victims to withdraw cash and take it to a local cryptocurrency kiosk, where they will send the payment directly to the scammer.
The Kentucky State Police (KSP) warns that once cryptocurrency is sent, it is extremely difficult to recover. Legitimate law enforcement officials do not ask for or accept cryptocurrency as payment for fines.
To avoid falling victim to this scam, residents are advised to use the Pause, Check, and Protect method: pause before taking action, check if the call is legitimate by verifying information through an official source, and protect yourself from scams.
