Kentucky Jury Duty Scammers Preying on Residents with Bitcoin Demands

A combined jury duty and cryptocurrency scam is targeting residents of Kentucky once again, according to the Kentucky State Police (KSP). The scammers call victims, claiming they missed jury duty, and pressure them into paying a fine in Bitcoin. They instruct the victim to withdraw cash and take it to a local cryptocurrency kiosk to pay the fake fine.

The scam is particularly concerning because once the cryptocurrency is sent, it's extremely difficult or impossible to recover. Legitimate law enforcement officials do not ask for or accept cryptocurrency as payment for fines.

The KSP warns that this scam could expand to other communities in the state, so all Kentuckians should be on the lookout. If you receive a call claiming you missed jury duty and are asked to pay a fine in Bitcoin, immediately hang up. Do not send money or give any personal information.

The Kentucky State Police advises residents to use the Pause, Check, and Protect method to help spot and avoid scams. This involves taking a moment to verify the information through an official source before taking any action.
