Kenya Anchors 15 Million Academic Records on Avalanche Blockchain to Combat Certificate Forgery

Kenya's National Examinations Council (KNEC) has anchored over 15 million academic records to the Avalanche C-Chain, a move aimed at combating certificate forgery and streamlining verification. This initiative was developed in partnership with local technology firm LegitDoc and marks one of the largest government blockchain infrastructure deployments globally.

The legacy paper-based verification system had significant vulnerabilities, including chronic delays, corruption, and forgery. Verifying a single Kenyan academic certificate previously required between 30 to 180 days under this system, with background screening firms experiencing six-month backlogs due to manual record retrieval within centralized government archives.

Traditional QR codes and databases failed to prevent academic forgery, as bad actors could easily clone verification web pages and compromise internal administrative credentials. The use of blockchain technology eliminates certificate forgery by converting student educational achievements into unique cryptographic hashes that are immutably anchored to a public decentralized ledger.
