Kenya Regulates Crypto Sector Under Capital Markets Authority

Share

Kenya has taken a significant step in regulating its cryptocurrency sector by placing virtual asset exchanges and other businesses under the oversight of the Capital Markets Authority (CMA).

This move follows the enactment of the Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASP) Act, 2025, which designates the CMA as the regulator for virtual assets service providers.

The new law aims to strengthen investor protection and comply with global anti-money laundering standards, particularly Recommendation 15 of the Financial Action Task Force.

Kenya's crypto reforms are part of a broader package of regulatory changes unveiled in 2025 to modernize its financial markets.
