Kimchi Premium Stretches for Seventh Consecutive Day in South Korea
The 'kimchi premium' in Bitcoin's price has persisted for a week on South Korean exchanges, marking its longest stretch since May. This phenomenon, where prices exceed international quotes, is seen as an indicator of Asian retail investor sentiment.
According to Bloomberg, the won-denominated Bitcoin price on Upbit traded 1% above Binance's dollar quote on August 1st. The premium has been positive for seven consecutive days, with the price gap reaching as high as 3.1% in early June but dropping to an average discount of 0.25% last month.
Rachel Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, noted that past episodes of the premium re-emerging have led to further Bitcoin price gains. Historically, the transition from a discount to a premium has resulted in stronger returns over the following weeks.
The return of the kimchi premium coincides with Bitcoin trading around $79,000 and optimism returning to the crypto market. The U.S. Treasury's announcement of an expansion of its long-term bond buyback program also contributed to August's strongest monthly gain since November 2024.
