Kimchi Premium Turns Positive as Bitcoin Price Gap Widens
The price of Bitcoin has widened its gap in South Korea as the Kimchi Premium and US spot Bitcoin ETF demand take center stage.
The Kimchi Premium, which measures the difference between Bitcoin prices on Korean exchanges and global markets, has turned positive for the first time since early May. The premium has been a barometer of retail mood across Asia, with Upbit's price holding a 1% premium over Binance's dollar-denominated price.
Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, notes that Korean retail tends to buy aggressively in risk-on phases and capital controls mean that buying shows up as a price gap rather than arbitrage flow. Markus Thielen, head of 10x Research, counters that Korea is unlikely to be a major driver in the initial stage of a Bitcoin rebound without a corresponding pickup in spot volumes.
The US spot Bitcoin ETF demand has been strong, with about $1.92 billion flowing into ETFs in the week of August 17 and another $923 million the following week. However, this flow is seen as institutional positioning with real capital behind it, whereas the Korean price gap is associated with domestic retail buying.
The path forward hinges on confirmation that has not yet arrived, with the premium's hold or fade determining whether this is a genuine retail-driven leg to the rebound or a passing shift in sentiment.
